A Nature-based Solutions Project

under HSBC’s Climate Solutions Partnership

In September 2021, The Conservancy Association (CA) and School of Biological Sciences, The University of Hong Kong (HKU) jointly launched the “Forest Carbon Stock Estimation in Hong Kong” project, which is a Nature-based Solutions project under HSBC’s Climate Solutions Partnership.

Our project aims to accurately estimate the above-ground biomass (AGB) of forest trees in different forest types in Hong Kong by using allometric equations or models. Hence, we could then determine the forest carbon stock of Hong Kong and evaluate the role and potential of reforestation, forest protection, and management in carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in Hong Kong.

Forest conservation, forest management, reforestation, and afforestation are important strategies in achieving CDR. These strategies also bring positive impacts to nutrients, biodiversity, and ecosystem services and are low in energy requirement in comparison with other strategies such as bioenergy with carbon capture and storage.

The project will enable accurate assessment of the investment in reforestation and forest management in Hong Kong and the CDR achieved over time.
